Have you ever thought about the fact that what we know and understand about God is formed and filtered by our mind?
We form an impression of God; who he is and what he is like, in our mind. It’s as if our mind paints a picture of who we think God is and often that picture never changes for the rest of our life.
The problem with this is that our mind is so very limited. How can a human mind adequately comprehend God? … It can’t.
This is one reason why we should make a daily practice of spending time with God in meditation, where we still our thoughts and minds and make time and space for our spirit to connect with God.
Our spirit communes with God without the limitations of the mind.
The more we are able to disengage our preconceived ideas about God, the more we will truly know Him.
One bible commentary says “Only the spirit of a man can really touch or commune with the Spirit of spirits”.
And that is what is so wonderful about meditating on God. It allows us to set aside the thoughts in our minds, our preconceived ideas and commune with Him, spirit to Spirit.
How disappointing it would be to discover you had lived your whole life only knowing God through your human understanding and preconceived ideas.
Imagine finding out there was so much more to God you could have experienced, but didn’t.
My sister and her family recently travelled to Malaysia for a holiday. Having been there myself, I suggested a fun thing to do would be to visit the Petaling Street Markets in Chinatown.
When my sister returned from her holiday I asked her about her trip and whether they had visited the markets. She told me that yes, they had gone to the markets, but were very disappointed because there were only a couple of stores and not many people.
I was very surprised because I have visited the markets quite a few times and know that there are two very long streets and the stores line both sides of each street. They even line the middle of the streets and it is bustling, crowded, noisy and fun.
We finally worked out that because there was a lot of traffic the day my sister and her family visited, the taxi driver had not driven them all the way to the markets. Instead he dropped them nearby and told them to walk further up the street.
It turned out my sister had not walked far enough along the street to find the markets.
This kind of experience can leave you feeling a bit disappointed and thinking “oh, if only I had gone a little bit further” or “if only I had known”.
Sometimes the situation can be much more serious and the results much more significant and it can be a devastating feeling to think “if only I had known, I would have… done things differently”.
It makes me think how awful it would be to get to the end of our life and realize that we had not experienced the fullness of who God is. Imagine if we thought we knew who he was but then discovered there was so much more that we did not know and had not experienced, but could have.
Imagine realizing that we had not “walked far enough down the street” to discover and experience as much of Him and his wonderful love and goodness as we possibly could.
It doesn’t matter how well we know him, he is so much greater and more wonderful and there is so much more to discover than what we already know or think.
This is why we should take time every day to still our minds and our thoughts and spend time in quiet meditation with God, spirit to Spirit.
It‘s like viewing earth from space. Earth looks so small from space but the closer toward it you travel, the bigger it gets and the more you can see and understand.
Just like God, the more we move toward him and the closer we get, the bigger and more wonderful we realise he is and the more we know and understand him.
Let your picture and understanding of God become so much bigger today by taking some time to draw closer to Him.
