The following are some practical tips on how to settle your mind, calm your spirit and meditate on God. Many of the blog posts I have written contain more detailed information on how to meditate and what to do during your meditation time.

things to know before you start
○ Don’t become “religious” about the method. The power is not in the method but in the act of actually meeting with God
○ In Matthew 6:7 Jesus said “when you pray do not keep on babbling like the pagans” (some bible versions call it vain repetition) Mantras are meaningless and unnecessary. Quoting scripture can help settle the mind but mantras do not serve any purpose
○ It is a personal choice whether to use music when you meditate. Music can help to settle your spirit and to focus on God but a good suggestion is to have at least some of your meditation time without music as it can also be a little distracting and cause your mind to wander
○ Remember it is not always easy to still your mind so don’t be discouraged if it takes a while to learn and even when you become good at stilling your mind there will be days when it is harder than others
○ Get plenty of sleep – it is hard to control the mind when you are tired
○ There are no rules about how long you should meditate but a good place to start would be to aim for around 20 minutes. This allows time to still your mind, settle your spirit and find that still, quiet place where your spirit connects with God
○ Sometimes there is a tangible presence of God but other times you have to believe that a transaction has taken place between your spirit and God’s spirit and there is always evidence of this later on. I believe God is sometimes “quiet” like this because
a) He wants us to come even deeper and even closer to Him
b) there is an area in our life we need to correct or
c) he is waiting for us to act on something he has already given us. Don’t try to force a tangible experience or a revelation from God. It’s not about experiences it’s about God
○ Psalm 119:105 says “Your word is a lamp unto my feet”. The Holy Spirit will never reveal something to you that is not in the bible or contrary to the bible and everything must always be taken within the context of the goodness and love of God.
How to practice God Centred Meditation
1) In Matthew 6:6 Jesus said “When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father in heaven…” Find a quiet place without distractions
2) Take a notebook, pen, bible and commentary. An online bible and commentary are useful for looking up scriptures that you may not know
3) Engage with your spirit, mind and body. Posture is important because your body reflects and affects the state of your mind and spirit. Have an “engaged” posture and your spirit will also be engaged
4) Take a couple of deep breaths and imagine everything falling off you and away from you. Let go of all your worries and concerns. Hebrews 12:1 says Let us throw off everything that hinders…
5) Focus on stilling your mind. If your mind starts to wander, don’t become anxious, let the thought go and refocus
6) Use scripture to help focus on God and calm your mind
7) Forgive and ask for forgiveness. Are there areas of your life that need correcting?
8) Remember God is in you – he is not distant
9) Enjoy His presence – communicate love and worship through your spirit
10) Listen for His voice. If you have stilled your mind and you are enjoying the presence of God (tangible or not) and a seemingly random scripture “pops” into your head, look it up. It is usually the Holy Spirit speaking to you and you will be amazed by what He reveals to you in those moments.
11) Write down what God speaks to you. And if you start writing and it starts to flow, keep going – the Holy Spirit speaks to you through writing too
12) Seek Him, seek Him, seek Him. The more hungry you are for Him, the more thirsty you are for Him, the more desperate you are for Him, the more you want Him, the more He reveals Himself to you.
